About Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park...Many adventurers and tourists, coming to see the ‘big trees’, list Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, as one of the most-treasured locations in all of California! This is not to say that any of the other state parks in northern California are not very beautiful and resourceful as well, this is just to say that Jedediah Smith really knew how to make a park, come to life! There is so much in the realm of color and dizzying heights of its trees that it all seems too good to be true! Yet it is true and Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park is one of the most visited of all the California State Parks, in the coastal redwood region. Make the trip so much better by planning and setting-up for a great family time in the ‘giants!’
The most visited and favored areas within Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park have to be the Boy Scout Tree Trail and Howland Hill Road. The latter, Hill Road, passes directly through the center of the park and is one of the most fantastically adored and beloved redwood drives of them all. This narrow dirt road seems as if it was steamrolled by a 2 ton roller, as it is one of the smoothest dirt roads ever constructed. This is just how moving California is in all things, simply perfect. If the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, during the day, hasn’t been enough environmental pleasure, then the Jed Smith campground is on the itinerary for a great nights rest under the stars, and the big canopy of the cultural redwoods. There is really something to be said about sleeping under the stars and under the canopy of the world’s largest living trees. By lying down on the forest floor, the cool Pacific Ocean breeze caressing one’s body and soul as you drift off to never-never-land, one last glance up through the canopy branches at the starry California nighttime display of beautiful stars and there it is the tallest canopies in the world!
The coastal redwoods, although magnificent and one of the biggest reasons that people come by the thousands each year to see, are not the sole reasons for people to flock here. The California Redwoods State Park system, especially Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, is not the only reasons for visitors to come to the northern California area. With the close proximity of the Jed Smith Park, (an hour and 45 minutes north of Eureka and Arcata) to some of the biggest metropolitan centers of northern California aside from San Francisco, this makes the State Park accessible and local. This is Humboldt County at its finest, wonderful cultural redwoods, the Pacific Ocean, and the people that you encounter along the way, some of the best in the whole world. So why not load up the family and head for Simpson Reed Grove in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, where the soul can be re-energized by the majesty of the giant redwood forest.
