About Del Norte Coastal Redwood State Park...

Beautiful Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is well-known for a variety of outdoor reasons and some very individualistic ones as well. Without a doubt, ancient old-growth forests are one of the best places to go, for a family vacation or just for hiking and bird-watching! The park is a mixture of the giant living organisms that are part of the namesake, and many other native flora and fauna in this northern California region. For those that desire a more physical approach and encounter with the wildlife and the environmental beauty that is the core of the Northern California experience in big redwood country, then Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is the object of that destination.

Many vacationers come to this fantastic location, deep in the heart of Humboldt County, to step back in time and live as the pioneers did during the Gold Rush of the late 1800’s. One of the best spots of all the beautiful and excellent family vacation locations in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is False Klamath Cove. This half-mile of beautiful white sand beach, is ideal for the adventurers that prefer water over woods, and is excellent for sight-seeing and marine life exploration.

Although swimming is not recommended anywhere in northern California, because of the rough-seas of the Pacific, the cold water, there does exist an opportunity for fishing and, marine bird watching encounters, and everything else that is associated with a great water-based vacation. The sea-water stuff is fine for those that enjoy that sort of thing, and Del Norte has some of the best spots for that liquid-type activity, but that is not what this area is well-known for, not at all. It is best known for the ‘Giants’ and majestic, sometimes 300 foot tall living organisms, that are the redwoods of northern California.

No other area has something like this, as large as this, bigger than life, then Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. The Giant Sequoia is not the only tree that stands sentry here in northern California redwood country; there are also red alders, big leaf maples, and the indigenous California bay tree, with a groundcover so dense that it’s in penetrable by normal means!

Most of Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park is located on the ocean-side of Highway 101, which is now converted into a fantastic hiking trail, that is used by many tourists and vacationers, which come into the redwood country area. Redwood Highway 101 is the old highway that was abandoned in 1935 for the more modernized path that brings individuals and families, from all the way as far as Memphis, to this fantastic and ‘heaven on earth’ location.

For those that desire a little more out of a family vacation, it has to be Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, and the beautiful scenery that is readily abundant there. One of the most exotic and terrific places to visit while in Del Norte, has to be Damnation Cove. Discovered by trailblazer Jedediah Smith in 1828, this pristine location combines the beauty of pink and purple rhododendron blossoms, with the impressiveness of a giant redwood! With so much to see and do and so many trails to discover, a vacation of a lifetime away from it all, awaits those that come to Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.
