The Clarke Historical Museum was founded in the 1920s by local history teacher Cecile Clarke. It moved from Eureka High School to the former Bank of Eureka building in Old Town in 1960.
The main hall houses long term and many frequently changing exhibits on various aspects of Humboldt County history including logging, the gold rush, maritime history, fashions, period rooms and everyday life. A second large hall features local Native American culture with an outstanding collection of basketry, regalia and stone artifacts.
The Museum collection continues to grow with donations of items -- photographs, documents and objects -- that illustrate life in Humboldt County from the distant to the recent past.
Admission is free though donations are appreciated. Group tours or outreach programs for schools, senior centers and community organizations can be arranged by calling 443-1947. Public hours are 11 - 4 Wed. - Sat.
